A little something to put a smile on any Luddite's face...
Ladies and gentlemen, I am now the proud owner of a radiogram. (Pics pending).
Now, you might be scratching your heads and wondering what I'm talking about so in that case I shall fill you in: it is an appliance with a phonograph (also known as a turntable or record player) and a radio all rolled into one. And it kicks arse :-D
It's a throwback to the '40s or '50s (or even '30s, depending on when radiograms and phonographs with loudspeakers and volume knobs came on the market and rendered the gramophone with its big ol' brass horn obsolete) with one of those old-fashioned volume dials and ornately carved wooden casing (that's right, actual wood, as opposed to those plain, boxy, plastic entertainment devices in black or silver which were typical of the '70s, '80s and early '90s when style just seemed to go completely out the window). Naturally it plays LPs (the 33rpm, the first thing we think of when we hear the word "record") and 45s, but also 78s (really old-school records, which were the currency before 1950).
Now I just need to get some more vinyl...
As an aside, it's interesting how different a lot of recordings sound on vinyl as opposed to CD or MP3. I've found that some songs (e.g. Maybelline by Chuck Berry) sound better on vinyl whereas some (e.g. Hound Dog by Elvis, anything by Jimi Hendrix or Cream) actually sound better on CD or MP3.
Sarah got me this new gadget for my birthday; I get it early because she's in Adelaide this weekend and I couldn't get the time off to join her (my birthday is actually on Monday).
Now, I could see if I can do that thing that rappers and house/techno/whatever DJs do where they drag the disc back and make that "whacka-whacka" sound, but (1) that could damage both the record and the player, which is stupid, asinine and idiotic in equal measures, and (2) it's just not my thing anyway....
